Recycling made easier in major Lend Lease shopping centres

Friday, 19 June, 2009

Shoppers and shopping centre staff will now be able to recycle efficiently and effectively while away from home thanks to a new industry-funded initiative between the Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of the Australian Food and Grocery Council and Lend Lease Retail.

The installation of new recycling infrastructure and signage in food courts, along with improved back-of-house waste management systems, will soon be completed at nine major Lend Lease shopping centres located throughout Queensland, News South Wales and Victoria.

The signage carries the PSF’s awareness campaign message of Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin to encourage people to make the effort and recycle when they are away from home.

Geoff Dyer, General Manager of Sustainability for Lend Lease Retail, is confident about the initiative and says that Lend Lease Retail is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and the reduction of waste to landfill through increased recycling in all of its shopping centres throughout Australia.

“It is a goal of ours to achieve a recycling rate of at least 30%, with a stretch target of 50%, of all waste generated throughout our shopping centres in Australia,” Dyer said.

“Through this initiative we have been able to work closely with industry in taking some important steps to achieving this goal. We are confident that staff and shoppers within our centres will do the right thing and use the right bin.”

Lend Lease Retail managed shopping centres involved in the initiative are: Cairns Central, Caneland Central, Sunshine Plaza and Indooroopilly in Qld; Caroline Springs Square, Pakenham Place and Greensborough Plaza in Victoria; and Erina Fair and Macarthur Square in NSW.

The Packaging Stewardship Forum is a forum of the Australian Food and Grocery Council. Its members include Australia’s major beverage companies and their packaging suppliers: Amcor, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, Cadbury Schweppes, Coca-Cola Amatil, Fosters, Golden Circle, Lion Nathan, Owens
Illinois and Visy.
