Citywide launches street-sweeping recycling plant
Infrastructure and environmental services provider Citywide has unveiled Australia’s first street-sweeping recycling plant. Located in central Melbourne, the facility will compile up to 80% of collected street-sweeping material - previously sent to landfill - for re-use and recycling.
“The recycling plant will deliver a range of environmental benefits on behalf of the community as a whole,” said Citywide Acting CEO John Collins. “Diverting waste from landfill reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and Citywide’s street-sweeping recycling plant takes this one step further by processing collected waste to create valuable by-products with multiple uses.”
The plant was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Hon Robert Doyle, who said it will help the City of Melbourne deliver on its targets to minimise greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste generation. The plant has the capacity to recycle 12,000 tonnes of street-sweeping material per year - the equivalent of 240,000 green waste bins.
“At the City of Melbourne, we are proud of the innovation that Citywide has shown in this project of national significance,” the Lord Mayor said.
