Big River Group has expanded its selection of environmentally conscious building materials with the launch of MaxiFloor — a sustainable autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) flooring product with good structural, soundproofing and fire-resistant properties.

By using reduced raw materials the product helps reduce around 30% of environmental waste compared to traditional concrete and 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the company. It is also a pollutant-free building material, containing no toxic substances or odours.

With good thermal insulation properties, the material will keep houses warm in winter and cool in summer, reducing overall energy costs compared to a traditional concrete slab floor. It is strong and features good airborne noise transmission properties. The result is a quiet floor without the squeakiness, bounce and flex found in particleboard flooring.

It is available in 75 and 50 mm thick panels, providing a suitable base for floor coverings including timber, vinyl, carpet and tiles. It is suitable for both internal and external applications, such as decks and balconies, and is installed in a similar way to conventional particleboard by professional carpenters. It is also non-combustible and so can be used in many applications that require specific fire ratings.

Manufactured from cement, sand, lime and water, the product is aerated by adding an expanding agent to the mix. The result is a steel-reinforced concrete panel filled with small, finely dispersed air bubbles, which is strong, lightweight and resistant to termites and vermin. It is fully compliant with current Australian Standards.
