In order to effectively manage waste in a global economy, producers, consumers and other groups have a responsibility to not only recycle or re-use products, but also to make this process as efficient as possible.


IBM advises City of Ballarat on waste management

The City of Ballarat has received pro bono consulting on waste management after winning a US$500,000 grant from the IBM Smarter Cities Challenge. The city was one of only two Australian cities, and 16 worldwide, to be awarded the grant in 2014.


Funding for transfer stations at closing landfills

Sustainability Victoria CEO Stan Krpan has announced $3.2 million in Victorian Government funding to develop new transfer stations and resource recovery centres at closing landfill sites in rural and regional Victoria, in addition to the $600,000 already allocated to build new transfer stations on the sites of closed landfills.


City of Sydney launches anti-butt campaign

In an effort to discourage smokers from discarding their cigarette butts on the street, the City of Sydney has launched the YUK anti-butt campaign. From 17 September to 2 October, visitors to Wynyard Park will find a 2 x 5 m Perspex sign made out of cigarette butts, spelling out the word "yuk".

City of Sydney exceeds NSW waste diversion targets

The City of Sydney has announced that it has diverted almost 70% - or about 20,000 tonnes - of its household waste from landfill each year. This makes it one of seven councils in NSW to exceed the state government's target of diverting 66% of household waste from landfill by 2014.
