UK-based company Syriniox has developed a water leakage system to detect very small leaks in large trunk water mains before bigger leaks occur.

Developed at the University of East Anglia (UAE) and commercialised by UAE spin-out company Syriniox, TrunkMinder can help water companies avoid massive losses of water and prevent damage to roads and buildings surrounding the pipes.

Syrinix managing director, Dr Paul Linford said Syrinix is trialling the product with UK company Thames Water.

"We believe that it has the most sophisticated and most sensitive leak-detection algorithms available, based on its world-class signal processing technology," he said.

The complete TrunkMinder system comprises electronic detection systems located on the pipes, remote monitoring systems and sophisticated data-analysis tools. Information on the status of the monitored pipes is delivered to the customer's control centre or other point of need using a suite of web-based tools.
