No More Blockages for Western Sydney Meat Works after Gorman-Rupp Pump Upgrade

Hydro Innovations was engaged by Western Sydney Meat Works, in conjunction with SJ Plumbing Industries, to investigate and provide a pump solution to replace an existing submersible pump in the abattoir’s wastewater collection pit. The pit, which handled both green and red lines, was experiencing operational issues due to the demanding nature of the application.

The Problem

The existing submersible pump was frequently blocking due to the high volume of solids and fibrous material ending up in the pit. These included paunch contents, stomach linings, undigested material, grit, and other foreign matter associated with abattoir operations. The design and positioning of the submersible pump made it vulnerable to this kind of material, which was constantly affecting performance.

Because of the regular blockages, plant staff had to closely monitor the system, which took up considerable time and resources. When blockages did occur, the process to rectify the issue was time-consuming and unpleasant. The pump needed to be lifted out of the pit, dismantled to access the impeller or suction end, the blockage manually removed, and the unit reassembled before being lowered back into place. These interventions were not only labour-intensive but also disrupted operations and increased risk for maintenance staff working in confined or hazardous conditions.

Given the consistent interruptions and the physical difficulty of servicing a submerged pump, the Meat Works needed a more reliable and serviceable solution to maintain operational continuity and reduce manual intervention.

The Solution

Hydro Innovations’ NSW Regional Manager, Phil Rothheudt, visited the site to assess the situation. Based on the site requirements and the nature of the solids being handled, he recommended the installation of a Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming pump. Unlike submersible pumps, the Super T Series pump is mounted above ground, making it far easier and safer for operators to access for both routine inspections and maintenance.

One of the key advantages of the Gorman-Rupp self-priming pump is that it does not require a foot valve. The system works with a simple open suction line submerged in the liquid, which greatly simplifies installation and reduces potential failure points. With no need to enter the pit for maintenance or blockage removal, operator safety is significantly improved.

To further enhance reliability, Rothheudt also recommended that the pump be equipped with the Gorman-Rupp Eradicator™ Solids Management System. This system is specifically designed to handle stringy and fibrous materials like intestines, gut linings, hay, and similar debris that are common in abattoir waste streams. The Eradicator system reduces the risk of clogs, jamming or materials wrapping around the impeller. It’s been successfully deployed at other meat processing plants and wastewater treatment facilities across Australia.

Based on the recommendation and track record of the Gorman-Rupp system in similar applications, Western Sydney Meat Works proceeded with the installation of a Gorman-Rupp Super T3C60SC-B, fitted with the Eradicator Solids Management System.

The Results

The results were apparent immediately after commissioning.

Within the first day of operation, the new pump was efficiently clearing the built-up waste materials in and around the pit and transferring them to the separator screen. The improvement in flow and consistency meant that materials that had been settled in the bottom of the pit for an extended period could finally be removed.

To accelerate the clean-up process, site personnel used an excavator to dislodge compacted solids at the base of the pit, allowing the pump to mix and transfer the heavier load to the screen. The pump handled the increased solids content without issue, demonstrating its capacity to manage tough applications from day one.

The operators also found that, in the rare event of a blockage or performance issue, the system was much easier to service. By simply removing the inspection cover on the suction side, staff could access and remove any blockage in minutes — without entering the pit, disassembling the pump, or stopping production for extended periods.

The Pump: Key Features and Benefits

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming pumps are engineered for tough wastewater applications. Available in sizes from 2″ to 10″, they offer flows of up to 200 litres per second. They are capable of operating up to 7.6 metres above the water level, allowing them to be installed at ground level for convenient access.

Maintenance is straightforward, with operators able to perform clearance adjustments in just a few minutes. These adjustments can be made without removing the pump from its position or disconnecting it from piping, minimising downtime and labour costs.

For abrasive or aggressive applications, the Super T Series can be fitted with hardened internal components or stainless steel 316 options. Pumps can also be supplied in full duplex stainless steel construction for highly corrosive environments.

This level of flexibility allows Gorman-Rupp pumps to meet the needs of a wide range of industries, including food processing, municipal wastewater and industrial waste handling.

Summary

The upgrade at Western Sydney Meat Works from a submersible pump to a Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming pump has led to significant operational improvements. Blockages have been virtually eliminated, maintenance is safer and more efficient, and overall system reliability has increased. With easier access and the proven effectiveness of the Eradicator Solids Management System, the site has gained both immediate and long-term benefits from the change.
