When you buy your new iPhone, make sure you recycle your old one

As the iPhone 6S hits stores today, MobileMuster is reminding consumers to recycle their old mobile phones if they choose to upgrade.

“Our research shows that many Australians are already holding on to at least one or more old phones as a backup, or because it has information on it they don’t know how to save or transfer,” noted MobileMuster Recycling Manage Rose Read. “But how many backups do you need? The reality is, many of these stored phones will never be used and will just end up forgotten in the back of the drawer gathering dust.

“We want to see people using their current handset until the end of its useful life; or if they don’t want it anymore, either pass it on to someone else to re-use, resell it online or recycle it with MobileMuster.”

MobileMuster is the official recycling program of the mobile phone industry in Australia. The program has over 4000 public drop-off points around Australia, enabling consumers to recycle all brands of mobile phones — plus their batteries, chargers and accessories — for free.

“When you’re recycling your old phone you’re not only clearing out e-waste and clutter, but you are helping to avoid future greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy, protecting our environment and conserving scarce natural resources,” said Read.

“Plus, for those with data security concerns, by recycling with MobileMuster you can be assured that old text messages, photos and data still left on the phone will be destroyed as they are broken up in Australia and processed for the plastics and metals in them.”
