Report on role of local government in waste and recycling released

Friday, 08 June, 2012

The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities has released the report ‘Role and performance of local government - waste and recycling related data and information’.

The study was commissioned to support work under Strategy 16 of the National Waste Policy: Less Waste, More Resources. Under this strategy, the Australian Government is collaborating with states and territories to develop a system that provides access to integrated national core data on waste and resource recovery.

The report provides a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction summary of the roles and responsibilities of local governments, as well as outlining key local government area (LGA) groupings and the information reporting systems in place within each jurisdiction.

Key performance data relating to resource recovery rates, service levels and financial costs is provided for each jurisdiction where sufficient LGA-specific information is publicly available.

The report can be accessed at http://environment.gov.au/wastepolicy/publications/local-government.html. Questions may be forwarded to wastepolicy@environment.gov.au.
