Landfill cell opens in Logan City

Thursday, 27 November, 2014

The Browns Plains Waste & Recycling Facility, located in Logan City, South-East Queensland, has opened its new 1.2 million m3 landfill disposal cell. The cell is built to modern-day engineering standards and is estimated to be large enough to receive waste into the 2020s.

Logan City Council Parks, Health, Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Trevina Schwarz (Division 11) said the new cell has been built over the past 12 months and will meet the community’s needs even as the city continues to grow.

“The cell is lined with a combination of more than 25,000 m3 of clay and approximately 40,000 m2 of a manufactured clay liner material to prevent pollutants escaping, as well as 2 km of drainage pipe to manage the leachate,” she said.

Councillor Cherie Dalley (Division 8) added that the cell is located more than 200 m further away from nearby homes, with the buffer expected to reduce the risk of environmental nuisance, including odours.

The cell took its first rubbish this week.
