Greenfleet first to register multiple forests under CFI
Not-for-profit organisation Greenfleet has had two of its reforestation projects registered under the Clean Energy Regulator’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI). This makes it the first organisation to have multiple reforestation projects registered.
Under the CFI, land managers can earn carbon credits by avoiding and capturing greenhouse gas emissions, then sell those credits to people wishing to offset their own emissions. Greenfleet encourages organisations to reduce their carbon footprint and offset remaining emissions by planting biodiverse Australian forests. To date, the company has planted over 7.5 million trees, creating more than 350 native and biodiverse forests for Australians.
Greenfleet CEO Sara Gipton said, “Being registered under the Carbon Farming Initiative means that these two projects have been validated by the peak independent body, which gives greater assurance that the carbon offset in our projects is verifiable.”
The first site, Old Gobur Road, Merton, is located in north-east Victoria, and the other, Whirrakee Wedderburn, is located near the Mt Korong Nature Conservation Reserve, just east of Wedderburn in the Victorian Central Goldfields. Both projects are now eligible Kyoto offset projects.
Gipton says the projects are a favourable addition to Greenfleet’s first purchase of land for creating a new forest, near West Wyalong in NSW, alongside NSW state forest.
“Having a site that is fully owned by Greenfleet gives us the ability to create a new forest more economically and efficiently, with 900 ha suitable for direct seeding. This allows us to continue greening Australia, one forest at a time, whilst creating connection corridors for wildlife,” she said.
