Focus on 'Securing our Water Future' for National Water Week

Tuesday, 14 July, 2009

National Water Week 2009, which will be held from 18–24 October 2009, will be hosted by the Australian Water Association (AWA) in partnership with the National Water Commission.

This year’s theme — Securing Our Water Future — will provide a platform for organisations involved in the water sector to exchange knowledge and ideas with the broader community.

“We are inviting water utilities, government agencies, councils, environmental groups and businesses to think about how they can bring their water awareness and conservation activities to the fore during the week of 18–24 October,” said Tom Mollenkopf, CEO of the AWA.

The program for National Water Week in 2009 is set to expand greatly from its traditional water education focus.

“While education will remain a key area of activity for National Water Week, there is a real interest from the community in becoming more literate on water-related matters. We’re committed to expanding the conversation, with opportunities for businesses and individuals across the country to take some very simple actions to assist in securing our water future,” said Mollenkopf.

Ken Matthews, CEO of the National Water Commission, said, “Managing our water more effectively is one of the most important and urgent challenges facing Australia. Drought, climate change and water shortages make water reform more necessary than ever.

“Partnering with the AWA for National Water Week provides a tangible example of the commission’s commitment to promoting the sustainable management and use of Australia’s water resources.”

Community, schools and environmental groups are invited to visit the National Water Week website, which has a great range of resources available to help groups run a successful National Water Week event.
