Carbon offset provider rated 'outstanding'

Wednesday, 03 December, 2008

Carbon Offset Watch, a collaboration between Choice, the Total Environment Centre and the Institute of Sustainable Futures, outlines the best carbon offset providers in Australia.

The SMRC was one of only five organisations to receive an outstanding rating, ahead of various 'good' and 'adequate' rankings.

In the past two years, the SMRC’s Regional Resource Recovery Centre, which turns organic waste into high-quality compost, has become recognised as Western Australia’s biggest greenhouse gas abatement project and has prevented 146,681 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

The fully integrated waste processing facility diverts household rubbish away from landfill for more than 350,000 residents, preventing methane emissions. The net difference in emissions between waste going to landfill and composting the material gives the SMRC carbon offsets than can be sold.

By buying offsets, consumers and businesses support projects that remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere or prevent them from being produced.

The SMRC is a joint green initiative between the Cities of Melville, Canning, Cockburn, Fremantle and Rockingham, and the Towns of East Fremantle and Kwinana.
