Tesla purchase part of Caspak's futureproofing strategy

Flexible packaging provider Caspak Australia is futureproofing its business by prioritising sustainability and innovation. The addition of a Series 3 Tesla to the company’s fleet of cars in December 2019 is the latest in a series of sustainability measures that the Braeside-based organisation has implemented.

“We’ve had a serious focus on sustainability from the beginning,” Caspak Australia CEO Bryce Hickmott said.

“As a packaging company, we’re very conscious of our impact on the environment and have been keen to implement business practices that help us and help the planet.”

The purchase of the Tesla is a step towards creating an all-electric car fleet. The vehicle’s dual battery — allowing a driving range up to 600 km when fully charged — makes it a practical choice for business.

Caspak’s premises are powered by rooftop solar panels, providing trackable power needs and helping the organisation reach carbon neutrality. And, with new premises under construction, this solar capacity will be increased to power a whole fleet of electric cars in the future.

“These measures mean that we’re essentially futureproofing the business against fluctuations in power and fuel prices, and providing consistent, trackable costs within the organisation,” Hickmott said.

Seeking strategies to reduce their carbon footprint, Caspak team members have also been working closely with Kingston Council and the ASPIRE program to reduce their commercial waste levels.

Caspak Quality Control Co-ordinator and Product Developer Chris Moffat said, “The ASPIRE program offers companies unique ways to reduce waste to landfill by connecting organisations that have a waste product that can be used in the manufacture of a new product.

“In our case it’s given us a chance to connect with the University of Swinburne, who are conducting research on how to repurpose, or re-use, trim waste from one of our product ranges.”
