New away-from-home recycling bins for north-east Victoria

The North East Regional Waste Management Group (NevRwaste) has recently awarded a tender for the regional rollout of new recycling bins through the region to Victorian manufacturer Draffin Manufacturing.

One hundred and four new waste and recycling bin enclosures for council streetscapes, 30 new special snow line waste and recycling bin stations for Alpine resort areas and 52 waste and recycling bins for parks and sporting grounds in the Alpine Shire will be installed by mid-2013. Overall, this equates to 186 new recycling bins to be installed across the north-east of Victoria, which will help to increase recycling rates and reduce litter in public areas.

The initiative is part of the National Bin Network (NBN), a $100 million, five-year, industry-funded plan to increase recycling and reduce litter nationally.

”Thanks to the $200,000 partnership between NevRwaste and industry, the new bins will make it just as easy to recycle away from home as it is at home,” said Jenny Pickles, General Manager of the Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum.

The bins will collect and recycle similar materials that can be recycled through council kerbside systems.

Additional funding was also provided through the NBN for 700 new waste and recycling signs for all new bins and existing infrastructure with the call to action to ‘Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin’.

Local councils involved in the project include: Alpine Shire, Benalla Rural City, City of Wodonga, Indigo Shire Council, Mansfield Shire, Rural City of Wangaratta and the Towong Shire. Alpine resorts involved in the project include: Falls Creek Resort Management, Mt Buller/Mt Stirling Resort Management and Mt Hotham Resort Management.

“There is a constant need to reinforce the recycling message especially when people are away from home,” said Kim Mueller, NevRwaste’s Regional Education Officer. “The best way to do this is to provide infrastructure that is accessible and easily understood by all residents and visitors, which is why projects such as this are so important to the region.”

Kevin Neligan from Draffin said, “We are excited to be involved with this project with all bin enclosures manufactured in Victoria.”
