Enviropacific completes treatment of lead-impacted site
Tuesday, 28 May, 2013
URS engaged Enviropacific when it needed to undertake chemical immobilisation treatment of 700 m3 of lead contaminated soil on its site in Alexandria, NSW.
The project included the collection of samples, completion of treatment trials and preparation of an application to EPA for a Specific Immobilisation Approval (SIA). Enviropacific was required to relocate contaminated soil, classified as hazardous and restricted solid waste (maximum leachable concentration >70 mg/L), from beneath a suspended slab and from within the building located on-site.

The work included: screening of contaminated soil to remove oversize (>100 mm) material prior to treatment; on-site chemical immobilisation of lead-impacted soil to reduce the waste classification to General Solid Waste; conformance sampling to ensure that the material met the requirements of the SIA; and transport and disposal of the validated material as general solid waste (maximum leachable concentration 0.07 mg/L) to an EPA licensed landfill.
The works were completed on time and all conformance sampling met the disposal criteria.
