Microbe DIY test kit

Tuesday, 24 July, 2007 | Supplied by: Melaklean Cleaner Air Products

The Melaklean Cleaner Air Products microbial test DIY kit can be used to determine the microbial load in process water, drinking water, wastewater or recycled water within 24 h.

The test solution colour changes indicating the level of bacterial contamination. The test solution colour is simply compared with a colour chart fitted on the test device.

The test kit is suitable for aerobic bacteria and can show presence of coliforms, E. coli, giardia, cryptosporidium, Campylobacter, Listeria and Legionella.

Specific tests available include Total Coliform and E. coli. The test kit can also be used for cooling tower water, to obtain a heterotrophic plate count, thus providing a fast snapshot of the condition of the cooling tower.

If the sample water contains a high concentration of fungi, the fungi (eukaryotic cells) will ingest the active indicator, reduce it and turn pink. Total Microbe will provide fungi detection when present at high levels and will also show environmental stress.

The red specks represent fungi colonies which are producing polysaccharides and they are looking for surfaces (side walls) to attach themselves to (filming). Fungi specks will be irregular in size and shape. Find 20 or 30 specks and they are a relative indication of high concentration level and environmental stress.
