$4.3 m for clean-coal project

Binderless Coal Briquetting Company, in conjunction with CSIRO, has developed a process which reduces the moisture content of low-value coals while significantly upgrading the energy content.

It then converts the product into briquettes that can be handled and transported like normal coal.

The new high-grade briquettes reduce production costs and enable higher energy output per units transported.

The briquette technology will potentially provide significant environmental benefits, emitting fewer CO2 gases than the low-grade coal that it is derived from.

"Australia has an abundance of coal and it will continue to be a crucial part of our energy generation for decades to come. The key will be to ensure that we continue to invest in cleaner energy technology," Australian Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane said.

"That's why the Australian government is investing $275 million in low-emission coal technologies across Australia.

"Projects like this ensure we are maximising our resource potential to the benefit of the Australian economy while lowering greenhouse gas emissions."
