Water recycling education centre opens

The Keneally government’s new Water Recycling Education Centre has been officially opened by Minister for Water Phillip Costa this week in St Marys, building on the existing community education resources of Sydney Water.

Joining Minister Costa at the opening was Member for Londonderry Allan Shearan. Costa said the centre uses state-of-the-art education and training technologies to explain the role of water recycling in securing Sydney’s water supply.

“This includes showing how water is recycled and then used, and how the latest technology and techniques in sustainable environmental management are delivering benefits for Sydney Water users,” Costa said.

“The centre is designed for universities, TAFE colleges and high schools, professional and trade groups, and key community groups.

“Sydney Water is working with secondary and tertiary teachers to ensure that the material at the centre targets and complements existing courses.

Shearan said the Water Recycling Education Centre is part of the $209 million St Marys Water Recycling Plant.

“Visitors to the centre will be able to observe the operations of the St Marys Water Recycling Plant as well as participate in a tour of the plant itself,” Shearan said.

“This plant is Sydney Water’s largest water recycling project and one of the biggest in Australia.

“It will provide about 18 billion L of recycled water each year, which will improve the quality of water in the Nepean River.”
