Energy efficiency tips
With a power price hike of 64% planned for NSW over the next three years and a 20% instalment due 1 July 2010, now is the time to ensure you don’t pay for what you don’t use!
The NSW Business Chamber’s tips on how to be energy efficient include:
- Switch off - All energy-consuming equipment should be turned off when not in use. Install timers as necessary.
- Fix leaks - Repairing dripping taps, showers and toilets will save you money on both water and energy bills.
- Schedule regular maintenance and cleaning of equipment including kitchens and vehicles.
- Install energy-efficient light bulbs.
- Adjust thermostat a few degrees higher in summer and lower in winter.
- Print double sided and use electronic documents rather than paper.
- Implement a recycling system (paper, plastic, glass).
- Install water-saving taps and showerheads.
- Engage your household/staff in sustainability efforts.
- Record and monitor your resource (energy and water) use, you can only manage what you can measure.
These energy-saving tips can be used across households and businesses, and promote not just sustainable practices but cash savings. For example, if energy makes up a quarter of business costs then a 20% energy savings reflects a 5% increase in profit.
