Thermatech paint technology for Colorbond steel
BlueScope Steel has introduced Thermatech paint technology across the standard Colorbond steel range, which gives a new level of improved thermal performance and provides architects and building designers with an appropriate building material to help fulfil their design briefs while achieving their sustainable objectives.
All roofs made from standard Colorbond steel now incorporate the Thermatech technology, which works by reflecting more of the sun’s heat - leaving the roof space and therefore the building cooler. In hot weather it is claimed to be able to keep uninsulated buildings an average of about 5°C cooler. In insulated buildings, Thermatech can reduce the need for air conditioning.
Cooler roofs also help reduce the effect of urban heat islands - metropolitan areas typically have higher air and surface temperatures than surrounding rural areas, caused by a prevalence of dark surfaces which absorb heat from the sun. A roof made from Colorbond steel with Thermatech technology can help lower air temperatures in communities by reflecting solar radiation and maximising heat loss from a building’s roof - further helping to lower cooling energy demands.
This offers architects and building designers greater design and colour choice; and in some parts of Australia, the amount of insulation required to create a comfortable home may be reduced.
