RAA delivers solar data in support of the RET

Friday, 05 October, 2012

The Australian Solar Council has congratulated the REC Agents Association (RAA) following the release of groundbreaking data on the cost of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). The data shows that the cost of the SRES is set to decline dramatically over the next two years, to make up less than 1% of residential electricity prices by 2014.

RAA research also confirms that critics of the SRES have overestimated the cost of the scheme by 25%, using a figure of $40 per certificate to cost the scheme when the real figure is around $30.

The research also notes that the SRES will continue to drive electricity consumption down; this in turn will continue to put downwards pressure on wholesale electricity prices and therefore costs to all electricity users. At the same time, the operational costs of the SRES will continue to fall.

More than four million Australians now use solar power, and the data indicates that it will be an important part of the country’s energy future.
