German company installs 'record' wind turbine with 199 m hub height

At its headquarters in Sengenthal, Germany, Max Bögl Wind AG has erected a series-produced hybrid tower with a hub height of 199 m for the first time. The total height of the turbine reaches 285 m.

The company said its completed tower has set a new record in the field of serially manufactured onshore wind turbines.

The turbine installed is a Vestas V172 with a rated capacity of 7.2 MW. Together with the existing generation facilities at the site, Max Bögl will be able to cover approximately two-thirds of its energy demand in Sengenthal through self-generated renewable electricity in the future.

“The first-ever construction of a serial-produced wind tower with a hub height of 199 metres opens a new chapter in the technical possibilities of wind tower construction,” said Stefan Bögl, CEO of the Max Bögl Group. “With our serial-producible tower design, combined with state-of-the-art turbine models such as the Vestas V172 used here, we are demonstrating how higher energy yields can be achieved economically. The turbine represents a further investment in the expansion of our own electricity generation from renewable energy sources and, at the same time, serves as a showcase project for a new generation of wind turbines. This is our response to the recent increase in demand for more powerful solutions for inland sites.”

At onshore locations, greater hub heights provide access to stronger and more consistent wind conditions. Following its planned commissioning in autumn 2026, the turbine is expected to generate approximately 17 to 18 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
