The Australian Energy Storage Council (ESC) has formally released the 2015 Global Energy Storage Market Overview & Regional Summary Report.

ESC Chief Executive John Grimes said the council was “excited at the opportunity to collaborate with our international partners and experts to produce this introductory report on the global energy storage industry”. Major organisations and experts who provided input into the report include the ESC, California Energy Storage Alliance, China Energy Storage Alliance, DNV GL, India Energy Storage Alliance and the National Electrical Communications Association.

“This introductory report identifies the applications, geographies and technologies that will experience the greatest growth in the short term,” said Grimes. “It looks at the economics of key applications and time frames for their adoption.”

Grimes described the report as “a fantastic starting point” to learn more about the exciting energy storage sector. He noted, “The boom in electric vehicle sales has delivered compact, energy-dense and increasingly cheap batteries for other uses.

“There is very strong interest in batteries linked to solar photovoltaics and in microgrids as prices fall. By 2030, the International Renewable Energy Agency forecast 150,000 MW of battery storage will be needed globally.”

The ESC is a not-for-profit organisation representing members including technology manufacturers, equipment providers, project developers, consultants, utilities and other energy industry leaders. The report is available to all ESC members and partners of contributing organisations.
