Clean energy booster funding for vaccine manufacturer

Thursday, 02 May, 2013

Veterinary vaccine manufacturer MSD Animal Health will use up to $335,660 of carbon price revenue to install a solar photovoltaic energy system at its manufacturing site in Bendigo East, cutting pollution and saving energy costs.

The funding has been awarded under the Gillard government’s Clean Technology Investment Program. The new 250 kW solar PV system will reduce carbon emissions intensity from the facility by 22% and result in savings of around $44,000 in energy costs per year.

Announcing the funding for Intervet Australia - trading as MSD Animal Health - the Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, Industry and Innovation, Yvette D’Ath, said the project would make MSD Animal Health more competitive.

“Introducing renewable energy through a solar PV system is a great way to cut costs in the manufacturing process,” D’Ath said. “This project will help MSD Animal Health to become more economically and environmentally sustainable into the future, and the Gillard government is pleased to be able to support it.”

The government’s contribution to the project will be matched by an equal investment by the company.

“I applaud MSD Animal Health for making this investment in the future of their business,” D’Ath said. “By integrating solar with other energy sources, they are showing leadership in their sector and in the local community.”

The Clean Technology Investment programs, which are funded by revenue from the carbon price mechanism, are an important part of the Gillard government’s plan for a Clean Energy Future. The $800 million Clean Technology Investment Program and the $200 million Clean Technology Food and Foundries Investment Program are in place to support manufacturers make the transition to a low-pollution economy. The $200 million Clean Technology Innovation Program is funding Australian businesses to develop new clean technologies.
