Nubian Water Systems selected for Rio Tinto FIFO Facility

Sustainable water solutions provider Nubian has announced that Hutchinson Builders has contracted to purchase two of Nubian’s GT600 water recycling systems to drive the capture, cleaning and re-use of water in laundry blocks at Rio Tinto’s Wickham ‘Fly In Fly Out’ facility in WA.

Over 3000 L of water a day will be cleaned and re-used to save money, build a better environment and drive sustainability initiatives. The system will report on water usage and provide management with valuable information to cut costs and manage water re-use.

Barry Porter, CEO of Nubian, explained: “The mining industry is becoming increasingly committed to water sustainability and to the wellbeing of their workers in remote locations.

“Remote dwellings pose costly challenges in water use and our systems drive water efficiency, cut cost and assist in the camp beautification process.”

He continued, “There are enormous challenges associated with providing enough water for remote mining camps. This means providing reliable water for drinking and other uses, a costly exercise. By using Nubian systems, Rio Tinto will be making the most use of its local water by capturing and re-using water - so as to maintain its water quality, water quantity and help provide pleasant living conditions for people living at the site.

“We are dedicated to providing sustainable water solutions for the remote environment, not only through our leading greywater treatment but also through our innovative water purification, quality monitoring and remote management technology.”

The 2003 UN World Water Development Report estimates by 2023 the quantity of water available will have decreased by 30%. The key factor impacting this trend is the urbanisation of the population. Nubian is determined to combat this process through the manufacture and implementation of organic treatment systems using chemical-free products.

“We are committed to helping mining companies meet the challenges of maintaining remote work camps. We are also delighted to be working with Hutchison Builders, who recommended our solution to Rio Tinto,” Porter said.

“Water is the world’s priority. It is not just an issue for rural areas or in periods of drought; with the rise in population, urbanisation and climate change, sustainable water should be on everyone’s agenda. It is Nubian’s hope that our commitment to delivering quality, environmentally friendly water systems will bring about positive change in the way the world uses its limited water supply.”
