Analysis shows AI's water use demands immediate action
The explosive rise of artificial intelligence is creating an urgent and largely invisible pressure on the world’s most precious resource: water.
New analysis highlighted by ISOIL Industria warns that every AI prompt is backed by data centres that require intensive cooling, often using vast volumes of water to prevent servers from overheating.
The article reports that asking ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions can consume around half a litre of water, and that 100 million users submitting just one prompt each could drive weekly consumption of up to five million litres. With AI demand accelerating, projected water demand linked to AI could reach 6.6 billion cubic metres by 2027.
ISOIL said the answer begins with awareness, measurement and accountability. Real-time flowmeters, leak detection systems and water quality probes can help data centres understand their water footprint, identify inefficiencies and reduce waste before shortages become irreversible.
As governments, utilities and technology leaders race to balance innovation with sustainability, ISOIL is calling for smarter monitoring across the entire integrated water cycle.
AI may define the future of productivity, but the future of water will depend on how industry measures, manages and protects every litre, starting now, at every facility and every decision point.
