$1m custom waste management truck rolled out at K'gari

REMONDIS Australia has rolled out a complex and advanced waste management truck to service one of Australia’s beautiful yet unforgiving collection locations.

Extensive research and planning went into delivering the truck which is custom-made to traverse the World Heritage-listed K’gari (Fraser Island) off the Queensland coast, north of Brisbane.

The Iveco Astra eight-wheel-drive front-lift truck with a Superior Pak body has recently gone into operation to collect campsite waste on behalf of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

REMONDIS Australia Bulk Logistics and Remediation Operations Manager Andy Heironymus said the company had gone all out to ensure a state-of-the-art truck and an efficient waste retrieval strategy, operated with the utmost care for the environment.

“We pride ourselves on devising tailor-made waste management solutions across the globe, and this is up there with the best,” Heironymus said. “K’gari is known for breathtaking natural beauty, but a lot of people wouldn’t know how difficult it is to move a truck across an area where mother nature can be ruthless.

“We’re talking about the world’s biggest sand island, with powdery sand, irregular terrain and rocks that would strand or ruin any standard truck. It’s also a high-salt environment with extreme weather patterns producing violent storms and flash flooding.

“That’s why our truck has special features including advanced rust protection, wide wheels and automatic tyre pressure variation technology for transitioning between different surfaces. Advanced satellite communication gear is installed because of the island’s limited connectivity.

“Given that the island is an internationally renowned jewel, QPWS has understandably set a high bar and put a lot of trust and faith in our relationship to deliver. The truck’s million-dollar price tag and our efforts in putting it to smart strategic use are well worth it.”
