Queensland businesses are being encouraged to apply for funding for innovative projects that will reduce fossil fuel usage, water consumption and greenhouse emissions, through the Queensland Sustainable Energy Innovation Fund (QSEIF) administered by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Proposals are being sought from Queensland organisations seeking to develop innovative technologies that reduce environmental impacts through energy and water consumption.

Since the fund was established in 1999, a total of $3.8 million has been provided to 48 organisations to assist them in getting their products to the next phase of commercialisation.

Technologies to be supported include those that are more energy efficient, use renewable energy sources, substitute biomass or waste for conventional fuels, co-generate electricity and process heat, or reduce water use.

Recent recipients of funding in Round 8 include projects for the development of a revolutionary power steering pump, an improved, low-cost on-site wastewater treatment plant, a construction panel made from natural plant-based materials, a tidal energy system and a soil moisture sensor to avoid over watering.

Draft applications must be received by the closing date of 17 March 2006, (final applications by April 14) with projects expected to commence after mid-year.

Technological development may be undertaken by the applicant or contracted to another company, research institution, university or consulting group.

The amount of QSEIF funding for any one project will generally be limited to $200,000, although a larger amount may be considered for projects demonstrating exceptional merit. Applicants are expected to make a significant cash contribution to the project.
