The 10th International Riversymposium & Environmental Flows Conference has teamed with Climate Friendly to implement a climate-neutral event and offset its carbon emissions.

The symposium, to be held in Brisbane from 3-6 September as part of Riverfestival, engaged Climate Friendly to audit its carbon emissions and has committed to neutralising its 106.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions produced as a result of holding the major conference.

"Working with Climate Friendly we are striving to offset travel, food, fibre and waste produced from more than 800 delegates and put renewable energy back into the power grid to replace the energy we consume," Riverfestival director Jonathan Parsons said.

"By switching to renewable energy, investing in 100% Australian Green Power and Gold Standard Credits, we are making a positive change in both real time and for years to come."

In addition to the symposium, Climate Friendly will provide green power for Riverfestival-produced events to offset carbon emissions created from QBE Riverfire (15 tonnes), Riverfire Dump and Burn (69 tonnes) and other associated events (187 tonnes).

Taking the concept one step further, Riverfestival invites Brisbane residents to attend its new event, Greening Our City, in partnership with Greening Australia and Brisbane City Council, on Saturday 8 September.

The family event forms part of Brisbane City Council's Living in Brisbane vision to return 40% of Brisbane to native vegetation by 2026.

"Greening Our City was designed to specifically combat the festival emissions and educate the community on steps they can take to nurture their environment in their day-to-day lives," Parsons said.

"Riverfestival, with the support of Brisbane City Council's City Smart team and catchment coordinators, aims to plant 1800 native trees, plants and shrubs during the event."
