British Council helps eco-visionary Australians to put their ideas into action

Thursday, 11 February, 2010

The British Council has announced the inaugural recipients of its Big Green Idea funding initiative. Among the projects to be supported are a sustainable events toolkit for festivals, a community bio-char project in northern NSW and a DIY video series on green home renovations.

Selected from a total pool of 87 applicants from around Australia, the winners took part in a rigorous selection process with the British Council. Each of the five recipients will now receive a $10,000 cash grant to kickstart an innovative sustainability project in their community.

British Council Director Rebecca Matthews said: “Overall it’s been very encouraging to see such strong contenders for this initiative. Each of the five winners were chosen for showing tremendous drive and resolve in their area of work, as well as their ability to combine this with the business and project management acumen they’ll need to make these projects happen.”

Offered for the first time in 2009, the Big Green Idea initiative called for applications from eco-entrepreneurs with savvy ideas addressing sustainability challenges faced by urban communities. The initiative is designed to ‘seed’ projects that motivate individuals to minimise their personal impact on climate change and have the potential to make a real contribution to Australia's environmental future.

Through the Big Green Idea, grants are provided for projects that help urban communities become more sustainable by:

  • reducing waste
  • coming up with better ways of travelling and using transport
  • reducing energy use
  • becoming more efficient with water
  • implementing sustainable design

The Big Green Idea is a part of the British Council’s International Climate Champions program that works in 60 countries across the globe with people who are passionate and committed to action on climate change.

Funding will be offered again in 2010.
