ABB, power and automation group, has signed a Strategy Alliance agreement with the WA Water Corporation valued at approximately $15 million over four years to provide ongoing design and supply of SCADA, RTU and communication systems support and maintenance for the Western Australian water utilities network.

Given the increased focus on improved water quality, conservation and distribution management, the WA Water Corporation is continually improving its ability to monitor and control its water network to optimise operations. The application of intelligent SCADA control and communication systems is pivotal in achieving this.

One of the major projects being undertaken under the alliance is the design, installation, testing and commissioning of the SCADA control system which will facilitate the integration of the Perth Seawater Desalination plant, currently under construction at Kwinana south of Perth, into the water network. The desalination plant will provide an extra 45 gigalitres of water each year. The alliance also covers ongoing maintenance support of the Water Corporation control systems extending as far east as the Goldfields.
