Kids get $75,000 for environment projects

Thursday, 12 July, 2012

$75,000 has been awarded to 17 schools and community groups across the country to undertake educational environment projects. The funding was made available through the Go Green Grants program, an initiative launched by Corporate Express and Junior Landcare earlier this year.

The grants program will see a diverse range of projects come to life, helping kids learn about sustainability and their local environment in a fun and interactive way. Projects include a mini-wetland learning centre, seed propagation project, creek clean-up, creation of habitat for native birds and butterflies, and recycling programs.

Heather Campbell, CEO of Landcare Australia, was impressed at the way recipients embraced the Landcare ethos by creating projects that address local environmental issues.

“If you look at Beauty Point Public School in NSW, their mini-wetland project will help tackle the issue of excess water eroding the school’s playing fields, and Oakwood State School in Queensland will be eradicating environmental weeds which have invaded the area. It’s great to see how schools and community groups are taking ownership for their local environment and playing their part in caring for the land,” she said.

Grant recipients also did an incredible job of securing a further $145,000 of in-kind support for their projects.
