Infrastructure Sustainability rating scheme launched in WA
Australia’s first national Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme was launched in Perth on 19 June 2012, by Main Roads Western Australia Managing Director Menno Henneveld.
The scheme, developed by the Australian Green Infrastructure Council (AGIC), covers transport, water and wastewater, energy and communication infrastructure types.
AGIC Chairman David Singleton said, “AGIC’s Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme is designed to drive innovation, reduce risk and validate industry achievements through independent certification.
“The launch of IS in Western Australia is very important given the high levels of planned infrastructure. In particular we hope to see IS used within the WA mining and petroleum industries, where users could potentially benefit from both reduced carbon footprints and improved profit margins.”
“Participation in the IS rating scheme can assist us in demonstrating our commitment to sustainable development in project delivery and our ability to deliver sustainable solutions and outcomes,” said Henneveld. “The IS rating scheme will also assist in developing capacity within Main Roads in sustainability and will help us to continually improve our project outcomes.”
Singleton concluded, “AGIC is very pleased to be in discussions with Main Roads on how to use the tool to explore the sustainability of their projects.”
