A new wave in water education

Thursday, 08 November, 2012

The Australian water industry has launched a new project that will support teachers in delivering water education in schools across the continent.

The Australian Curriculum Project - Water Education in Schools aims to coordinate existing efforts in water education across Australia in order to update and develop new resources that are digital, interactive and aligned with the Australian Curriculum.

Australian Water Association Chief Executive Tom Mollenkopf said the project will provide a means for the water sector to pool funds in order to combine efforts and ensure quality water education messages are delivered across all learning areas in Australia.

“This collaboration is essential in ensuring existing water education materials are updated, new materials are developed and all resources are integrated into the Australian Curriculum and produced in a digital format. By working together it will mean there will be less duplication of resources, efforts can be shared and costs can be saved,” said Mollenkopf.

“This is an important opportunity for the water sector to ensure all students across Australia have access to the latest information on Australia’s water issues, wherever they may be located. Educating the students of today will ensure that we are prepared for Australia’s variable and volatile climate into the future.”

Twenty-one water organisations have already financially committed to the project and a steering committee has met to develop a work plan that will span for the next three years.

Once complete, all resources will be free and accessible for use by all teachers across the country.
