2022 Young Global Leaders announced by WEF

This year’s newest members of the Forum of Young Global Leaders (YGL) have been announced, with Sophia Hamblin Wang, the Chief Operating Officer of Mineral Carbonation International (MCi), being one of only two chosen from the Australasia and Oceanic region for the honour.

The new class of YGL members is announced annually, with 109 people joining the program this year split equally across genders and from 42 countries. The program is run by the World Economic Forum with collaboration from organisations such as Stanford University, Amazon and Uber.

The selection process involves identifying and celebrating leaders under the age of 40 who are working to develop world-changing solutions to the world’s problems. The members of the YGL enter into a three-year leadership development program to increase the level of their impact.

Hamblin Wang has become a leading voice in the carbon capture and utilisation sector, believing in a top-down incentivisation for achieving net-zero goals. The company she works for, MCi, operates a chemical engineering process to transform CO2 emissions from industrial sources into solid materials that can be used to create a range of products.

“It is a true honour to be joining this stellar group of Young Global Leaders in 2022, working at the forefront of creating equitable and fair outcomes for the world. I look forward to this valuable opportunity to amplify our leadership potential, with assistance from the World Economic Forum,” Hamblin Wang said.

“The YGL program will allow me to unlock my own leadership potential and strive for excellence. Participating in this initiative greatly aligns with the values of MCi to advance a more sustainable and inclusive world.”

The other new entrant to the program from the Australasia and Oceanic region is Boston Consulting Group Managing Director and Partner Caroline Blanch Israel.

YGL alumni include global leaders such as New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron.
