The Banksia Foundation has announced the 62 finalists that will be taking part in the 2016 Banksia Sustainability Awards, said to be the longest running sustainability awards in Australia.

Spread across 13 categories but united by an overarching theme of innovation, the finalists come from all around the country; from Port Hedland and the Tiwi Islands to the Tasmanian Midlands. The projects themselves are diverse as well, ranging from sustainable hairdressing salons to converting toxic cremated remains into nutrients for trees.

One such finalist is the 202020 Vision, comprising over 370 partner organisations from across the public and private, academic and not-for-profit sectors. Their mission is to champion green space in our cities, with the ultimate goal of creating 20% more green space in our urban areas by 2020. The collaboration has been nominated within the Sustainable Cities category.

“I commend the finalists on their vision, outcomes and commitment to not just sustainable development, but industry-wide transformation,” said Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond. “It is heartening to read about these incredible projects and I urge everyone to join us at the Banksia Awards to be inspired by our finalists’ success stories and to celebrate our winners.”

Each of the finalists will present a TED Talk at the 28th annual Banksia Sustainability Awards, to be held in Sydney on 30 November as part of Sustainable Development Goals Australia 2016 (SDGA16). To register for the conference and/or awards ceremony, click here.
