Biohazard code of practice to be launched next week

The 7th edition of the Industry Code of Practice for the Management of Biohazardous Waste (including Clinical & Related wastes) - formerly the Industry Code of Practice for the Management of Clinical and Related Wastes - will be launched on 23 July at the National Energy from Waste Symposium.

The code of practice has been prepared by Biohazard Waste Industry Australia & NZ (BWI), a division of the Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA) formed to develop and promote consistent standards for the management of biohazardous wastes. The goal of the code is the voluntary commitment by all stakeholders to environmental best practice in the transportation, treatment and disposal of biohazardous waste.

The seventh edition was prepared following extensive consultation with state and territory health agencies, environment and occupational health and safety agencies, and medical and nursing professional associations. Following the guidelines in the code should ensure not only environmental benefits, but also that wastes are managed in a safe and cost-effective manner.
