Responsible recycling of automotive and industrial batteries
The Australian Battery Recycling Initiative (ABRI) has initiated an industry awareness program to ensure that all organisations involved in the recovery of automotive and industrial batteries are aware of their legal, social and environmental obligations.
The first step is the publication of two brochures: 'Responsible recycling of used lead acid batteries' and 'Responsible recycling of industrial nickel cadmium batteries'.
These summarise the requirements for transport and storage, insurance, safe handling and packaging, and refer companies to government agencies for more information.
Implementing good practices for the management of used batteries will help companies to:
- manage their business risks
- avoid legal prosecution
- protect the health and safety of workers and the general public
- avoid environmental damage from spills or accidents
- protect their corporate reputation
The ABRI is a not-for-profit association established in 2008 to promote responsible environmental management of all batteries at end of life.
