Legacy Emissions removed from landfill

Tuesday, 19 May, 2009

SITA welcomes the announcement by Greg Combet, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, that the federal government has removed Legacy Emissions caused by waste landfills from the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

The removal of Legacy Waste Emissions from the scheme has been widely supported by the landfill industry members and, in particular, SITA.

SITA's concern about the equity of imposing a liability on emissions from previously deposited waste, or so-called 'Legacy Emissions', has been acted on by Combet and the Rudd government.

The delay in the commencement of the scheme announced recently provides the industry with an extra year to prepare for the scheme.

Eric Gernath, Managing Director of SITA Environmental Solutions, said, “This is a fair decision which reflects the commonsense view that current waste generators should not have to pay CPRS permit costs for disposal activities of the past.”
