Tenders called to build residential recycled water scheme

Tuesday, 20 April, 2010

Sydney Water has called for tenders to construct vital infrastructure for one of the largest recycling schemes in Australia.

Sydney Water Managing Director Kerry Schott said the Hoxton Park recycled water scheme would eventually provide 1.4 billion litres a year to about 14,000 homes as well as industrial areas in the south-west growth area.

“Recycling plays an important part in the NSW government’s Metropolitan Water Plan, which includes providing recycled water for about 180,000 new homes in the north-west and south-west growth centres,” Dr Schott said.

“Sydney Water already provides recycled water to more than 18,000 homes through Australia’s largest residential scheme at Rouse Hill. This scheme will eventually provide recycled water to 36,000 dwellings.

“The Hoxton Park scheme is the next residential scheme to be built, this time in Sydney’s south-west.

“Already we have laid almost 22 kilometres of pipeline for the scheme. The tender will cover the next phase of work, including a recycled water plant and reservoir.

“The scheme will be delivered in two stages, with stage one expected to be complete by 2013 and stage two by 2017, depending on the progress of new housing developments.

“Areas to be serviced by the scheme include Edmondson Park, Middleton Grange, Ingleburn Gardens, the Hoxton Park aerodrome development, Cecil Park South and the Panorama estate development.

“Recycled water will be used for watering gardens, washing cars and toilet flushing and for light industry.

“Using recycled water for these activities helps save our drinking water for drinking.

“New developments enable Sydney Water to lay recycled water pipes around the same time as other infrastructure before residents move in, to minimise disruptions and save on costs.”

The successful tenderer will be responsible for:

  • Design and construction of a recycled water treatment plant at the existing Glenfield sewage treatment plant.
  • Design and construction of a recycled water pumping station at the existing Glenfield sewage treatment plant.
  • Design and construction of a recycled water reservoir at Edmondson Park.

Tenders close in May and a contract is expected to be awarded in November this year.
