Wind

Feature (2)
  • Mighty wings for wind power
A new wind turbine that promises to advance the harnessing of offshore wind energy has been given the go-ahead in the UK. No longer is the structure just a gigantic propeller atop a cylindrical tower, but instead it is a pair of V-shaped arms up to 120 m high with four rigid 'winglets' along their length.
  • Southern Ocean resistant to changing winds
The Southern Ocean slows the rate of greenhouse warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in the ocean. But previous studies raised the alarm by suggesting the Southern Ocean carbon sink is now ’saturated‘ and no longer able to keep pace with increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

  • Renewable Energy Solutions Eco Whisper Turbine
The Eco Whisper Turbine features an intuitive blade design that is virtually silent. The turbine stands at 21 m high and the blade measures 6.5 m. The 20 kW electricity-producing wind turbine has a unique cowl/ring that prevents air from spilling off the blades. The wind hub and blade are made from aluminium and are therefore resistant to rust. If the turbine is placed in a good wind site it has the ability to generate 45,000 plus kWh per annum.
  • Power resistors for wind turbines
As applications in wind power generating systems evolve, the need increases for power resistors that meet the stringent needs of various parts of turbine subsystems — for functions like braking and in-rush current protection. Tyco Electronics offers custom designed and manufactured resistors that suit customer requirements in the alternative energy space; for example, from an application in the pitch control in a turbine to the inverter in either the solar or wind market segment.

  • Wind farms improve scenery
Wind farms generally improve the scenery of locations that were not that picturesque to begin with. According to a study in Geographical Research, published by Wiley-Blackwell, wind farms have a negative impact on landscapes with a high scenic quality, but a positive effect on dull and mundane landscapes.

  • Construction of wind farm
The construction of Infigen Energy’s Woodlawn wind farm has commenced at Veolia’s Woodlawn Eco-precinct located at Tarago, some 250 km south of Sydney. Covering 6000 hectares, the precinct also houses the Woodlawn bioreactor. The 48.3 MW Woodlawn wind farm, currently under construction, will be owned and operated by Infigen. It will consist of 23 wind turbines and is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2011.
