Sustainable remediation of LNAPL in fractured basalt
Since late 2007, URS Australia (URS), on behalf of a major oil company, has managed the continuing investigation and remediation of a petroleum fuels pipeline release site in Victoria. Sustainability principles and measures have been a major feature of the remediation. The release was initially believed to be short term and consisted of primarily unleaded petrol, jet fuel, and diesel fuel from a multi-product pipeline. The pipeline was promptly repaired and contaminated fill soil from the immediate vicinity of the release was removed and disposed of off site. One of the most significant challenges at this site is determining the extent and techniques for removal of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) within regulatory mandates and time lines.

Radioactive elements treatment report published
Virotec Global Solutions has released a technical document summarising Virotec’s ability to treat radioactive elements. The document, authored by Dr Lee Fergusson, Virotec’s Chief Executive Officer, presents findings from Virotec projects around the world which have successfully treated a range of radioactive elements, including uranium, strontium, caesium and thorium. The document was produced specifically for use by Virotec’s US partners who are pursuing work with the government of Japan to effectively deal with radioactive soil and water around the disabled Fukushima power plant where high levels of caesium and other radionuclides have been released into the environment.
Exair Chip Trapper vacuum for contaminated liquid
Exair’s Chip Trapper offers a fast and easy way to clean solids such as chips, swarf and shavings out of used coolants and other liquids. The unit vacuums the coolant or liquid that is filled with debris into the included 208 L drum, trapping all the solids in a re-usable filter bag. With a turn of the flow valve, clean liquid pumps back out. Expensive coolant that used to last only six weeks can now last longer with regular use of the Chip Trapper. The unit is suitable for use on machines with sumps, parts washers, tanks and storage containers.
Organic residue treatment
A treatment system for organic residues has been launched by CST Wastewater Solutions, promising to convert almost any organic residue or energy crop into biogas, valuable electricity or heat.
Contaminated soil recycling machine
The Hitachi SR200G Soilfixer soil recycler uses a number of methods — including micro-encapsulation and chemical fixation — to reduce the hazard potential of solid wastes by decreasing the leachable concentration of the contaminants.
On-site disinfectant preparation
Oxiperm systems safely produce a 2% chlorine dioxide (ClO2) solution from commercial sodium chlorite (NaClO2) solution and hydrochloric acid (HCl) on site.
