Don't waste your e-waste

Wednesday, 30 August, 2006

Residents of Port Phillip are now able to recycle their unwanted electronic goods at the transfer station in South Melbourne.

The e-waste " unwanted mobile phones, computers and associated machinery " will be transformed into other products by Beyond Waste Recycling, a company based in Seaford.

The free service is open to Port Phillip residents and accepts mobile phones, all computer associated parts (including central processing units, mice, keyboards, cables and software), computer monitors (please no scratches, screen burns or broken surrounds), laptop computers, printers, scanners and fax machines.

Computer screens will be reused as television screens while the other machine parts are dissembled into various metal and plastic components and recycled into new products.

"This scheme stops e-waste from going to landfill and prevents dangerous chemicals such as lead, mercury and cadmium leaching into groundwater. Even better, the e-waste is either reused or recycled rather than cluttering up the garage or simply being tossed away," Mayor Janet Bolitho said.
