C&I waste recycled into fuel

A South Australian company has become the first waste-to-energy company in Australia to be certified Greenhouse Friendly by the Department of Climate Change. SITA ResourceCo Alternative Fuels underwent rigorous independent verification to achieve its new status.

“It’s a tremendous validation of the company’s green credentials and the environmental benefits of diverting waste from landfill,” said Managing Director Simon Brown.

SITA ResourceCo’s Wingfield plant processes construction, demolition, commercial and industrial waste and recycles it into clean burning fuel. It can convert up to 350,000 tonnes of raw material per annum into 150,000 tonnes of fuel.

“It is a zero waste initiative that not only reduces landfill, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and our reliance on natural gas,” Brown said.

As a Greenhouse Friendly business, SITA ResourceCo will now be able to produce and sell greenhouse gas abatements as carbon offsets in the voluntary carbon market.

“We have currently registered over 160,000 tonnes of abatement, which is equivalent to the yearly emissions from over 32,000 cars or the electricity usage of 22,500 Adelaide households,” he said.

Over two million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be abated through SITA ResourceCo’s SA facility over the next 20 years.

The company is also planning to expand interstate, with a rollout of similar alternative fuel facilities in other states throughout Australia.
